As summer 2025 comes to an end, I'd like to take a moment to reflect on my experience working as a Community Engagement & Climate Capital Intern for Self-Help Credit Union in Miami Springs from May to August. First of all, I'd like to thank and shoutout the amazing team I got to work with that made me feel welcome and gave me impactful work from day one. Samuel Chesser, Marcus Bright, Ph.D., Yannaira Mendez, Forest Dezore, and Luis Joao Davila, I was so inspired by your commitment to advancing economic justice and appreciative of the warm and kind atmosphere you maintained in the office. This summer, I learned about how Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) use capital as a tool for good to help everyone build wealth and achieve economic prosperity. I was privileged to attend 14 events & meetings across Miami-Dade & Broward counties where I got firsthand exposure to the community development finance and nonprofit ecosystem of South Florida, and the chance to meet so many people and organizations driving positive, systemic change. The projects I worked on this summer included researching & developing over 20 reports on potential depositor foundations and nonprofits, where I thoroughly delved into their work & missions to identify areas of alignment with Self-Help and potential collaborative projects. I also researched and provided summaries on nearly 130 climate-focused organizations in South Florida whose constituents could benefit from learning about Self-Help's residential solar, electric vehicle, and home energy efficiency loans. Finally, I looked into the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, and created marketing materials that showcased how Self-Help's lending contributes directly and indirectly to all of them. My experience this summer exposed me to so many interesting and innovative ideas at the forefront of the battle for economic & climate justice. I learned about how urban farming combats the harmful effects of food deserts, how the Social Determinants of Health are affected by financial institutions, the processes behind developing green affordable housing, and so much more. I am departing this internship feeling fulfilled and grateful to have played a small role in making the world a more equitable & sustainable place for everyone in it!
