Using the levers of food education, food access and food policy to advance
food justice in the nation's capital.
Kicking Off Produce Rx
In case you missed it, our Produce Prescription Program with Giant Food, DC Health, and AmeriHealth Caritas DC kicked off on Wednesday. The program allows 500 Medicaid recipients with diet-related chronic illnesses to receive prescriptions for fresh fruit and vegetables. At the kickoff event, we heard from current patient Adrienne Dove, DC Department of Health Director Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt, and Councilmembers Trayon White and Mary Cheh. The program and the kickoff event were featured on WAMU, NBC 4, ABC 7, Washington City Paper, and WTOP.

Senior Grocery Access Program
Last month, we launched a pilot program with Lyft and the American Heart Association of Greater Washington to provide 50 seniors in DC with discounted rides to the grocery store. The pilot was featured in the Washington Post, where program participant and Farmers Market Brigade volunteer Florentine Jones discussed her experience with food access in DC and the grocery access program so far.
School Food Advisory Board Recap
Call for Farmers Market Brigade Volunteers
Around 60 people showed up to discuss nutrition education and food waste at last week's School Food Advisory Board, hosted with DC Public Schools' Food and Nutrition Services Team. Learn more about the SFAB here.
DC Greens is looking for volunteers to assist with Farmers Market Brigade season! At participating DC farmers' markets, volunteers will be responsible for distributing checks to members of the Produce Plus program, which provides eligible DC residents with $10 to spend on fresh fruit and vegetables. You can find times and locations for the trainings here. Contact Mary Alice for any additional information.
